Transmission Facts

• Your transmission is responsible for sending power from the engine to the wheels.
• The first automatic cars were made in the 1950s. This is when the first automatic transmission repair shops opened.
• There is no such thing as buying a brand new replacement transmission for your vehicle. All replacement transmissions are used or remanufactured from used transmissions.
• There are roughly 30 types of transmissions that will fit 80% of cars.
• Transmission fluid serves the following functions:
  
  

  Lubricates the gears, bearings, and clutch packs. Transmits drive torque from the engine to the transmission input shaft. Carries hydraulic pressure through the valve body to engage and disengage the clutch packs that change gears. Cools the entire transmission.

• Transmission fluid should be changed periodically. Check your owner’s manual for specific recommendations.
