All About Transmissions

Following is information about transmissions and transmission care. Please feel free to call our shop at (309) 452-5595 or stop by with any questions you may have about your transmission.

Transmission Facts

  • Your transmission is responsible for sending power from the engine to the wheels.

  • The first automatic cars were made in the 1950s. This is when the first automatic transmission repair shops opened.

  • There is no such thing as buying a brand new replacement transmission for your vehicle. All replacement transmissions are used or remanufactured from used transmissions.

  • There are roughly 30 types of transmissions that will fit 80% of cars.

  • Transmission fluid serves the following functions:
    • Lubricates the gears, bearings, and clutch packs.
    • Transmits drive torque from the engine to the transmission input shaft.
    • Carries hydraulic pressure through the valve body to engage and disengage the clutch packs that change gears.
    • Cools the entire transmission.

  • Transmission fluid should be changed periodically. Check your owner’s manual for specific recommendations.
