Transmission Facts
- Your transmission is responsible for sending power from the engine to the wheels.
- The first automatic cars were made in the 1950s. This is when the first automatic transmission repair shops opened.
- There is no such thing as buying a brand new replacement transmission for your vehicle. All replacement transmissions are used or remanufactured from used transmissions.
- There are roughly 30 types of transmissions that will fit 80% of cars.
- Transmission fluid serves the following functions:
- Lubricates the gears, bearings, and clutch packs.
- Transmits drive torque from the engine to the transmission input shaft.
- Carries hydraulic pressure through the valve body to engage and disengage the clutch packs that change gears.
- Cools the entire transmission.
- Transmission fluid should be changed periodically. Check your owner’s manual for specific recommendations.
